It was a night of spaceships, UFO desserts, flashing fern-like centerpieces, and a mysterious Windex-blue drink called the “Future-tini” — but it must have been the anti-gravity rays that sent money flying into orbit at Saturday’s future-themed Sweetheart Gala and Auction. One sensed that even E.T. was phoning home for more of it.
After the hors d’oeurves and filet mignon, after music by The Disposables and Crossfire, and after the silent and (increasingly spirited) live auctions, nearly $200,000 had been raised the Boys and Girls Club Valley of Moon.

Kevin O’Neill, senior loan consultant for Countrywide Home Loans, turned out to be an extra-sweet Sweetheart of the Ball. Along with being a Platinum Donor to the Boys and Girls Club, O’Neill started off donations for the Club’s “Fund-a-Need” program with an eye-popping $25,000 pledge, starting off a chain reaction that landed $66,600 for the Club’s art department.

After hearing that O’Neill has committed to donating $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club for 2006, San Francisco Giants “Ball Dude” Dick Leland commented, “I’d make him a Sweetheart, too!”
